Have Property Damage from the Storm? Here’s What You Need to Know

If your home, vehicle, or belongings were damaged during recent severe weather in Clinton County, take a breath—we’re here to help point you in the right direction. The Ohio Department of Insurance (ODI) has excellent resources to support you during this time and answer any questions you may have. Call them at 800-686-1526 or visit insurance.ohio.gov.

When it comes time to file a claim, having a local insurance representative you can sit down with face-to-face brings real peace of mind. They understand the challenges in our community, know your coverage inside and out, and are committed to helping you navigate the process quickly and fairly. It’s not just about filing paperwork—it’s about working with someone who’s part of your community and genuinely wants to help you recover.

Start with Safety and Documentation

Before anything else, make sure your home and family are safe. Once it’s secure:

  1. Take photos and videos of all damage before you clean up or move anything.

  2. Make a written list of damaged items and losses.

  3. Save all receipts for temporary repairs or lodging.

Claim Filing Checklist

When you’re ready to file your insurance claim, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Your insurance policy number(s) and contact info for your agent

  • Photos and/or video of damage

  • A list of damaged or destroyed items

  • Receipts for any temporary repairs

  • Your home inventory, if available (see below)

  • Copies of any correspondence with your insurer

📝 Pro Tip: File your claim as soon as possible. Most insurers have a deadline and will send adjusters quickly to help you start the process.

Avoid Contractor Fraud

Watch for red flags such as:

  • High-pressure sales tactics

  • Cash-only payment demands

  • Requests to handle your insurance claim for you

  • No written contract or estimate

Create or Update a Home Inventory

A home inventory is crucial for verifying losses. You can:

  • Use the free NAIC Home Inventory App, available on the App Store

  • Take photos and videos of your rooms and contents

  • List serial numbers and estimated values of your items
