Preparedness University: Empowering Communities to Be Ready

Disasters don’t wait. Neither should you. That’s the driving force behind Preparedness University, a new initiative designed to equip individuals, families, and communities with the knowledge and skills to handle emergencies confidently. Built by Clinton County EMA, this training program delivers practical, real-world preparedness strategies to help people plan, respond, and recover effectively when crisis strikes.

Why Preparedness University?

Emergencies come in many forms—severe weather, extended power outages, transportation accidents, hazardous material incidents, and even active threats. Too often, communities are caught off guard, leading to preventable harm and unnecessary chaos. Preparedness University was created to change that by offering free, accessible training that anyone can take to enhance their readiness.

Courses Now Available

The first two courses at Preparedness University are live and open for registration:

Basic Preparedness Training – Learn how to develop an emergency plan, build a disaster supply kit, and stay informed during critical situations. This course is the foundation of readiness for any emergency.

Power Outage Preparedness – Understand backup power options, generator safety, and best practices for keeping essential systems running when the lights go out.

But we’re not stopping there! More courses are in development, including Vehicle & Evacuation Preparedness, a vital training considering our rail lines, highways, and active agriculture sector. Additionally, Stop-the-Bleed training is now available—an essential, life-saving course that teaches bleeding control techniques to help in traumatic injury situations.

When and Where?

The first classes begin Monday, March 17, during Ohio’s Severe Weather Awareness Week, with additional sessions the following week. If enough interest is shown, we’ll add Saturday morning sessions to accommodate more participants.

Who Should Attend?

Preparedness is for everyone—community members, educators, first responders, business owners, and public officials. If you live in Clinton County or surrounding areas, this is your chance to get free, practical training that could make all the difference in a crisis.

Join the Movement

Preparedness isn’t just an individual effort—it’s about strengthening our neighborhoods and communities. We’re exploring Neighborhood Preparedness Teams, a concept to organize local groups that coordinate resources, share knowledge, and provide mutual support before, during, and after emergencies.
