Spring Storm Preparedness

Spring in Clinton County, Ohio, brings warmer temperatures, longer days, and the potential for severe weather. Thunderstorms, tornadoes, high winds, and flooding can develop quickly, making preparedness essential. Taking a few proactive steps now can help protect your family, pets, and property when the next storm hits.

Know the Hazards

Spring storms can bring damaging winds, large hail, and even tornadoes. Understanding the threats in our area is the first step toward readiness. Visit Clinton County EMA’s Thunderstorm Safety and Tornado Preparedness pages to learn about local risks and how to stay safe when storms strike.

Make a Household Emergency Plan

A well-thought-out emergency plan ensures your family knows what to do when severe weather approaches. Your plan should include:

  • A safe location in your home to shelter during a tornado or severe storm (e.g., a basement or interior room on the lowest floor).

  • A communication plan to reconnect if family members are separated.

  • Evacuation routes in case you need to leave home quickly.

Get step-by-step guidance on building your plan at www.cc-ema.org/plan.

Build an Emergency Kit for Home and Car

Storms can knock out power, close roads, or force you to shelter in place. A well-stocked emergency kit can help you stay safe and comfortable. Your kit should include:

  • Non-perishable food and water for at least three days.

  • Flashlights, batteries, and a weather radio.

  • First aid supplies and necessary medications.

  • Important documents stored in a waterproof container.

  • Supplies for pets, including food and water.

Be Prepared for Power Outages

Severe weather can lead to power outages that last for hours or even days. Taking steps to prepare can help you stay safe and comfortable during an outage.

  • Have flashlights, batteries, and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio on hand.

  • Stock up on non-perishable food and water to last at least three days.

  • Keep phones and essential devices charged before storms arrive.

  • Consider investing in a backup power source like a generator, and ensure it is used safely.

  • Store extra blankets, warm clothing, and alternative heating options in case the outage occurs during colder weather.
